I’ve been watching on YouTube, the channel feminist frequency. In particular, the video series: “Tropes vs. Women”. In video 6, they discuss the ‘Straw Feminist’. A common faux feminist character in TV and movies who claim they are feminist but are written to be so vile, emasculating and hateful, they make all feminists appear to be this way, thereby, discrediting feminism.
One show they used as evidence was “The Powerpuff Girls”. The episode: ‘Equal Fights’ in 2001. It had a villain called Femme Fatale who committed crimes in the name of feminism. She does bring up some major arguments about feminism, but since the city of Townsville (the fictional city in the show) is a haven of equality, she looks ridiculous.
But in real life, we do not live in an equal society and women do face discrimination just for being identified as women.
The problem I had with the analyses here was that it never mentioned the surprise ending that was extremely feminist and encouraging. Especially since this was a popular kids TV show that retains has a large fan base even now.
When Femme Fatale does finally get caught. She immediately falls into the argument that since she’s a woman her punishment (jail time) should be lessened. But then Blossom (leader of the Powerpuff girls, the one in pink) says that when first wave feminist Susan B. Anthony was imprisoned for protesting, she was offered a lesser jail sentence due to her being a woman. Susan said that if she wanted true equality, than she would also be punished equally to a man. Therefore, if Femme Fatale was a real feminist, she would take the same punishment as everyone else, regardless of gender or sex.
The Powerpuff girls: feminism in cute, cartoon super heroines!
